Chapter 1 - The Sound of Terror

|
The moment I stepped through the front door, I knew something was terribly wrong.
I heard my eight-month-old daughter, Emma, first.
It wasn't the soft whimper I was used to hearing when she was hungry or needed a fresh diaper. It was pure, unfiltered terror—a high-pitched scream that cut straight through the quiet elegance of my foyer.
I dropped my heavy brass keys where I stood. They clattered loudly on the marble console table, but I barely registered the sound.
“Emma!”
I sprinted toward the main living room, my heart hammering against my ribs so violently I could hear the blood rushing in my ears.
What I saw at the end of the corridor stopped me dead in my tracks.
The stroller was teetering dangerously close to the very edge of our grand marble staircase, angled right toward a steep twenty-foot drop onto the hard tile below.
On the floor, Clara—our middle-aged housekeeper, the quiet woman who had cared for my daughter like her own flesh and blood since the day she was born—was curled protectively around Emma. She was trembling, her apron stained with dust, her arms locked tight around my sobbing baby.
And standing just a few feet away was Vanessa, my fiancée.
Tears streamed freely down Vanessa’s contoured cheeks. Her hands were pressed over her mouth as if she could barely catch her breath.
“Adrian!” She rushed toward me the instant she spotted me, her voice cracking with theatrical anguish. “Thank God you’re home! I walked in from the patio and saw her—Clara was pushing the stroller right toward the stairs! I screamed at her, and she dropped everything and grabbed Emma just to make it look like she was saving her!”
I froze, my gaze darting between Vanessa’s hysterical, tear-streaked face and the elderly housekeeper shivering on the marble floor.
Clara looked up at me. Her dark eyes were wide, wet with tears, and filled with a profound, quiet heartbreak I will never forget.
“That is not true, Mr. Adrian,” Clara whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of the accusation. “I heard the wheels rolling. I ran from the dining room. I barely caught her in time. I was saving her.”

Vanessa spun around, her eyes flashing with pure venom.
“She is lying! She tried to kill Emma because I reprimanded her earlier!”
