Chapter 17 - Darkness in the Mansion

|

I didn't panic. Panic was a luxury that fathers protecting their children could not afford.

I moved silently through the dark hallway, using the dim beam of my flashlight directed at the floor so as not to give away my position through the windows.

I reached the kitchen where Clara was already standing near the pantry, holding a heavy cast-iron skillet, her eyes wide in the darkness.

“Mr. Adrian,” she whispered, her voice tight with tension. “The landline phones are dead.”

“Listen to me very carefully, Clara,” I commanded in a quiet, firm whisper. “Take Emma and Olivia into the panic room behind the wine cellar right now. Lock the reinforced steel door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone unless you hear my voice give you our personal security code.”

“What about you?” Clara asked, her eyes filled with deep fear.

“I’m going to secure the house,” I replied.

Clara nodded once, showing incredible courage. She hurried upstairs to gather the girls while I reached under the kitchen island counter, pressing a hidden biometric sensor.

A small drawer popped open, revealing my personal defense handgun—a custom 9mm pistol I had kept locked away since leaving the military years ago.

I loaded a full magazine into the grip, the metallic click sounding loud in the quiet kitchen.

Upstairs, I heard the faint, heavy thud of the wine cellar panic room door locking shut. My children were safe behind four inches of solid ballistic steel.

Now, it was just me and whoever had cut my power.

I moved silently down the main corridor toward the rear glass patio doors.

The wind howled outside, rain beating violently against the glass.

As a flash of lightning illuminated the dark backyard for a fraction of a second, I saw three tall, dark figures standing on my patio, wearing black tactical gear and ballistic masks.

They weren't common burglars. They were professional mercenaries.

And they were lifting a heavy hydraulic glass-cutter toward the frame of my patio door.
