Chapter 3 - The Footage Doesn't Lie

|

The atmosphere in the room shifted instantly.

I felt Vanessa’s arm stiffen against my side. Her hysterical breathing suddenly quieted, her shoulders locking into place. The tears that had been pouring down her cheeks seemed to dry up in an instant.

“See what, sweetie?” Vanessa asked, her tone shifting into a sweet, patronizing pitch that sounded completely forced. “Your poor sister was almost hurt. Let your father handle this.”

Olivia didn't even look at Vanessa. She walked straight past her, marched over to the main living room console, and tapped a few buttons on her smartphone screen.

A moment later, the seventy-five-inch television screen above the fireplace flickered to life.

It was the live interface for our home security system—a commercial-grade setup I had installed after my late wife passed away. Most of the cameras were visible, but I had placed a hidden wide-angle lens inside the grandfather clock at the end of the hallway six months ago for added home security.

Vanessa’s eyes went wide. She took half a step backward.

“What is this?” Vanessa demanded, her voice losing its sweetness, replaced by a sharp, metallic edge. “Adrian, why is she playing videos right now?”

“Quiet,” I commanded coldly, my eyes locked on the screen.

The video feed was crystal clear, fully color-balanced, and date-stamped just seven minutes earlier.

On the screen, we watched the hallway. Emma was sitting in her stroller, happily playing with a plush rabbit. Clara was nowhere in sight, having stepped into the kitchen to warm up a bottle.

Then Vanessa appeared on the monitor.

She looked around the empty hallway. There was no terror on her face, no panic, no love. Her expression was completely blank, cold, and calculated.

She walked slowly over to the stroller. She reached down with her right foot and quietly flipped off the wheel safety brake.

Then, with two fingers, Vanessa deliberately gave the stroller a hard, sweeping push directly toward the grand staircase.

She stepped back into the shadows near the dining room door, folded her arms, and watched it roll.

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.

On the screen, Clara suddenly sprinted into the frame from the kitchen like a blur. She threw her body onto the marble floor, sliding across the slick tile, her arms reaching out in desperate panic. She caught the front wheels of the stroller less than two inches from the brink of the top stair.

Only after Clara had pulled Emma safely into her arms did Vanessa step out from the shadows, open her mouth, and begin to scream and fake her tears.

The video clip finished and looped back to the beginning.

Nobody in the room breathed.

I slowly turned my head away from the television screen to look at the woman I had promised to love for the rest of my life.
