Chapter 16 - The Night of the Storm

|

Six months passed.

The changing of the seasons brought a welcome sense of normalcy back to our estate.

Vanessa Reed and Julian Sterling were formally tried, convicted, and sentenced in federal court. Julian received thirty-five years in a federal penitentiary, while Vanessa was sentenced to twenty-eight years without the possibility of early parole.

My investment firm had fully recovered its public reputation, Clara was formally made a full partner in managing our domestic affairs with a generous trust pension, and my daughters were thriving.

It was a dark, torrential November evening when a massive autumn storm rolled over the Virginia hills.

Thunder rumbled deep in the sky, shaking the thick glass panes of our living room windows while heavy rain sheets lashed against the roof.

At 10:30 PM, the power in the estate suddenly cut out.

The lights flickered twice and died completely, plunging the grand house into total, pitch-black darkness.

“Dad?” Olivia’s voice called out nervously from the upper hallway.

“Stay where you are, sweetie,” I called back, turning on the high-powered LED flashlight I kept in my desk drawer. “It’s just the storm. The back-up generator should kick on in ten seconds.”

I stood in the center of the dark hallway, counting the seconds in my head.

Five... six... seven... eight...

The familiar hum of the heavy diesel generator in the basement failed to start. Instead, a harsh, metallic alarm pinged twice from the wall-mounted security panel near the front door.

I walked over and pointed my flashlight beam at the digital screen.

A glowing red error message flashed across the backup display:

MAIN POWER LINE MANUALLY SEVERED. BACKUP GENERATOR FUEL LINE CUT.

My blood ran instantly cold.

This wasn't a power outage caused by the storm.

Someone was inside the perimeter gates. And they had intentionally cut our power lines.
