Chapter 15 - Olivia's Discovery

|
Two days after the dramatic arrests on the bridge, the truth exploded across national news networks.
This time, there were no glossy press releases or crying fake victims.
The FBI released the complete, unedited audio recordings of Julian Sterling and Vanessa planning the hit, alongside the clear surveillance footage of the stroller attempt and the copies of Vanessa’s false international passports.
Julian Sterling’s prestigious law firm crumbled overnight as federal investigators seized their records, uncovering a decade-long history of estate fraud, money laundering, and illegal asset seizures targeting wealthy widowers.
Vanessa Reed—whose real name was revealed to be Victoria Vance, a wanted international con artist—faced multiple federal counts of attempted murder, conspiracy, identity theft, and corporate extortion.
With both targets held in maximum-security federal custody without bail, peace finally returned to my home.
On a quiet Saturday afternoon, Olivia sat beside me on the back patio while Clara pushed baby Emma in her swing nearby. The sun was warm, washing over the green lawn, making the horrific events of the past weeks feel like a fading nightmare.
Olivia was scrolling through her iPad, organizing digital photos from our family trips.
“Dad?” she asked softly, looking up at me.
“Yes, sweetie?”
“How did you know Clara didn't do it?” Olivia asked, her blue eyes curious. “Before I showed you the video clip... did you really believe Vanessa?”
I looked across the lawn at Clara, who was making Emma laugh by making silly faces.
I took a deep breath, reaching over to pull Olivia close against my side.
“For a split second, Olivia, my mind was confused because I couldn't accept that someone I trusted could be so evil,” I confessed honestly. “But deep in my heart, I knew Clara loved you girls. True love leaves a trail of actions over years, not just words.”
I kissed the top of Olivia’s head.
“And I learned that my twelve-year-old daughter is the braves, smartest girl in the entire world.”
Olivia smiled brightly, leaning her head against my shoulder. “I was just protecting my sister.”

We sat together, watching the sunset cast long golden rays across the garden. It felt as though the dark storm that had threatened to consume our lives had finally passed, leaving our family stronger, closer, and more united than ever before.
Or so I believed.
