Chapter 12 - Silent Intimidation

|
We didn't call the police immediately.
In a high-stakes conspiracy involving corrupt high-profile lawyers and seasoned con artists, calling local dispatch too early meant giving them time to destroy evidence or claim misinterpretation.
I rode in the passenger seat of Thomas’s dark SUV as we navigated the fog-covered roads toward the industrial waterfront.
My mind raced with memories of Julian Sterling. I remembered him sitting in this very office, smiling warmly as he handed me my late wife’s final documents. I remembered him telling me, “If you ever need anything, Adrian, your family is like my own.”
The absolute depth of human greed was sickening.
Ten minutes later, Thomas pulled the SUV into an overgrown alleyway across from an old, rusted boat repair hangar near the water.
The silver sedan Julian was known to drive was parked near the rear loading dock, its engine off, its lights killed. Beside it stood Vanessa’s sports car.
Thomas pulled two small earpieces from his glove compartment, handing one to me.
“I deployed a long-range parabolic microphone on the roof of the hangar two minutes ago,” Thomas whispered, adjusting his receiver. “Listen.”
Static hummed in my ear for a brief second, followed by the crisp, amplified sound of voices arguing inside the metallic building.
“You ruined everything, you stupid bitch!” Julian’s sharp, panicked voice boomed through the earpiece. “All you had to do was make it look like an accidental fall! Instead, you got caught on camera by a twelve-year-old child!”
“Don't you raise your voice at me, Julian!” Vanessa snapped back, her voice laced with venom. “You promised me the security system in that hallway was disabled! You didn't check for hidden internal cameras!”
“It doesn't matter now!” Julian yelled. “Adrian is holding a national press conference at 9:00 AM! He has the false passports you idiotically kept in your vanity! Once he shows those to the federal prosecutors, FinCEN will freeze my law firm’s accounts by noon!”

There was a tense silence on the line, followed by the metallic click of a firearm slide being pulled back.
“Which is why,” Julian’s voice dropped into a terrifying calm tone, “we aren't going to let Adrian reach that press conference.”
