Chapter 38 - The Midnight Decryption
Natalia returned to Guadalajara with the encrypted flash drive clutched tightly in her purse. It was a digital bomb capable of obliterating the political landscape of the entire state.
She brought the drive directly to the foundation’s secure server room. Elena had flown in an independent, highly vetted forensic accountant from Mexico City—a man who owed his career to Elena’s legal mentorship and despised political corruption.
For six grueling hours, they sat in the dim, air-conditioned server room while the accountant ran aggressive decryption algorithms against Javier’s hidden files.
At exactly 2:00 AM, the firewall finally cracked.
The accountant let out a long, low whistle. "You didn't just find a smoking gun, Ms. Natalia. You found the entire armory."
He projected the decrypted files onto the large wall monitor. The screen illuminated a massive, undeniable network of wire transfers connecting Mauricio Salazar’s cartel-backed shell companies directly to offshore accounts registered under Senator Arturo Vargas’s private trust.
"He took over thirty million pesos in bribes to kill municipal zoning investigations," Elena said, her eyes scanning the dates. "And here it is. The authorization signature for the police raid on your eco-resort last year. Vargas signed off on the police turning a blind eye while Salazar’s men destroyed your machinery."
"He is the architect of the entire corrupt ecosystem," Natalia whispered, the absolute magnitude of the discovery washing over her.
Suddenly, the foundation’s heavy security doors rattled violently. The external cameras flickered and went black.
"We have a breach," Natalia said, her blood running cold. She pulled up the secondary, hidden camera feeds on her laptop.
Swarming the lobby of the office building were not local police, but highly paid, heavily armed private mercenaries wearing unmarked tactical gear. Vargas wasn't waiting for a legal pretense. He had dispatched a black-ops team to seize the foundation, destroy the servers, and capture Natalia by lethal force.
"Elena, trigger the lockdown protocols!" Natalia shouted, slamming her hand against the emergency alarm system. Heavy titanium blast doors immediately descended over the server room entrances, sealing them inside a digital vault.

"They have breaching charges, Natalia!" Elena panicked, watching the mercenaries set explosives against the reinforced glass of the lobby. "We have maybe ten minutes before they blow the doors!"
"We only need five," Natalia replied, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "Upload the entire decrypted hard drive directly to the National Anti-Corruption Commission in the capital. And copy every major federal news outlet in the country."
