Chapter 21 - The Unseen Shadows

The first six months in the new multi-story office building were a whirlwind of unprecedented success. Natalia’s architectural firm, freed from the parasitic financial drain of Javier’s family, had doubled its revenue. She was designing luxury eco-resorts on the coast and modern, sustainable living complexes in the heart of Guadalajara. Her name was no longer whispered in elite circles as the "poor girl who married well," but as the brilliant mastermind who had outplayed them all.

But success breeds a new kind of envy.

It was a rainy Tuesday morning when Natalia sat at her massive glass desk, reviewing blueprints for a commercial plaza. The intercom buzzed, and her assistant’s voice crackled through.

"Ms. Natalia, there is a gentleman here to see you without an appointment. He says it concerns the property deeds for this building. His name is Mauricio Salazar."

Natalia frowned. She owned the building outright. She had paid for it in full, using the reclaimed funds from her divorce settlement and her own thriving business accounts.

"Send him in," Natalia commanded, closing her laptop.

The heavy oak doors swung open. Mauricio Salazar was a man who reeked of dangerous, old money. He wore a tailored charcoal suit and a smile that did not reach his cold, calculating eyes. He was one of the most ruthless real estate developers in the state, known for swallowing independent firms whole.

"Natalia. What a beautiful office you have built for yourself," Salazar purred, stepping into the room uninvited and looking out the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"Mr. Salazar. To what do I owe the interruption?" Natalia asked, her voice perfectly even.

"I am a man of vision, Natalia. And I want this building. I am prepared to offer you twenty percent above market value to vacate the premises by the end of the month. My firm needs a new downtown headquarters."

Natalia didn't blink. "This building is not for sale, Mr. Salazar. Not for twenty percent, not for two hundred percent. I suggest you look elsewhere."

Salazar’s fake smile vanished instantly. He leaned across her desk, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "You are playing in a very deep ocean, little architect. People who refuse my offers tend to find their businesses suffering terrible, unforeseen accidents. I will give you forty-eight hours to reconsider."

He turned and walked out, leaving a suffocating chill in the room. Natalia immediately picked up her phone and dialed Elena. The war was not over; the battlefield had simply changed.
