Chapter 32 - The Aftermath of the Raid

The news of Mauricio Salazar’s arrest sent a seismic shockwave through the business and political elite of Guadalajara. When the federal prosecutors released a heavily redacted portion of the audio recording to the press, detailing Salazar’s brazen threats and extortion tactics, his massive real estate empire collapsed overnight.
Investors pulled their funding, municipal contracts were immediately suspended, and corrupt local officials scrambled to distance themselves from the disgraced developer. The federal authorities raided his corporate headquarters, seizing millions of pesos in illicit funds and uncovering a massive web of cartel-related money laundering. Salazar was facing multiple life sentences in a maximum-security federal penitentiary.
Javier’s fate was equally devastating. Facing insurmountable evidence from his own handwritten notebook—provided anonymously by Jimena—and his clear voice on the wiretap, his public defender had no viable strategy. The prosecution charged him with conspiracy to commit arson, corporate espionage, and domestic terrorism.
Javier broke entirely during the interrogation. He sobbed, begged for mercy, and attempted to throw Salazar under the bus, but it was useless. He was denied bail and remanded to the brutal, overcrowded Puente Grande federal prison to await trial.
Doña Graciela, completely destitute and facing severe public humiliation, attempted one final, desperate play.
A week after the arrests, Natalia and Doña Refugio were enjoying a quiet Sunday morning in their garden. The sun was shining, and the lemon trees were in full, fragrant bloom.
The front gate rattled loudly. Natalia walked to the wrought-iron fence to find Doña Graciela standing on the sidewalk. She looked haggard, wearing outdated, frayed clothing. The aristocratic, cruel matriarch who had demanded total submission was entirely gone.
"Natalia, please," Graciela begged, gripping the iron bars, tears streaming down her wrinkled face. "Please drop the charges against my boy. He is all I have left. He is terrified in that prison. I beg of you, show some mercy!"
Natalia stared at the woman who had happily sanctioned the burning of her mother’s house.

"You taught him that cruelty was power, Graciela," Natalia replied, her voice cold and unyielding. "You raised a monster. Now, you both get to live with him."
Natalia turned her back and walked away, leaving the weeping woman alone on the sidewalk.
