Chapter 11 - The Morning of Panic

The fallout was instantaneous and utterly spectacular.

At exactly 7:30 AM, Natalia’s phone buzzed with a frantic, tearful voice note from Jimena. Her corporate card had just been publicly declined at an exclusive aesthetic clinic for her scheduled Botox appointment.

At 7:44 AM, Karla sent a furious, panicking text message complaining that her fabric suppliers in Mexico City hadn't received their weekly payment and were threatening to sue her boutique.

At 8:03 AM, Mónica called six times in a row, leaving a message that her private university tuition portal had rejected the automatic payment, blocking her from registering for the semester.

But it was Doña Graciela who sent the final, damning message that eradicated any lingering shred of doubt in Natalia's mind.

“A good, respectable wife does not financially punish her husband’s family over a simple mess caused by a clumsy maid.”

Natalia walked over to the bed and silently handed the phone to her mother. Doña Refugio read the words slowly, her shoulders slumping as if the physical weight of the insult was pressing her down into the mattress.

“Maybe I really should just take the bus back to my village, Natalia,” her mother whispered, defeated.

“Absolutely not,” Natalia said, her voice vibrating with iron-clad resolve. “You are staying right here with me. We are going to watch their castle burn.”

At 9:00 AM sharp, a sharp knock echoed on the hotel room door. Elena Robles, Natalia’s ruthless, brilliant attorney, walked in carrying two large coffees, a thick legal binder, and a terrifyingly calm demeanor.

Elena immediately walked over to Doña Refugio and gave the older woman a warm, respectful hug. Then, she turned to the table and began reviewing the massive stack of documents Natalia had prepared.

“This isn't just a standard divorce proceeding anymore, Natalia,” Elena said, her eyes gleaming as she looked at the fake invoices.

“I know,” Natalia replied.

“Good. We protect your mother first, we secure your assets second, and we let them decide exactly how much prison time they want to risk fighting us.”
