Chapter 35 - The Girl With No Voice

The foundation on the fourth floor of Natalia’s building had become a sanctuary for women fleeing the darkest corners of Guadalajara. But even with all their security, some ghosts cast longer, more terrifying shadows than others.
It was a quiet Thursday evening when Elena Robles bypassed the reception desk and walked directly into Natalia’s private office. She was not alone. Clinging to Elena’s arm was a young woman in her early twenties. She was shivering violently, her eyes darting around the room like a hunted doe. She wore an expensive, tailored silk dress, but her bare feet were bruised and bleeding.
"Natalia, lock the doors," Elena commanded, her voice devoid of its usual courtroom bravado. It was replaced by a tense, palpable urgency. "And pull down the blinds."
Natalia didn't ask questions. She pressed the security lockdown button under her desk, sealing the executive floor. She walked over to the young woman, her heart aching at the familiar look of absolute, paralyzing terror.
"My name is Natalia," she said softly, keeping her distance so as not to overwhelm her. "You are completely safe here. Nobody can get through those doors without my permission."
The young woman opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. Her throat worked frantically, but the trauma had physically stolen her voice. She simply wept, silent tears streaming down her pale cheeks.
"Her name is Sofia," Elena explained, guiding the girl to the plush leather sofa. "She is the wife of State Senator Arturo Vargas."
Natalia felt a sharp, icy chill run down her spine. Senator Vargas was one of the most powerful political figures in the country, a man universally beloved by the media and heavily favored to be the next governor. He was charming, wealthy, and seemingly untouchable.
"She managed to slip a handwritten note to one of my paralegals during a public charity gala an hour ago," Elena continued, pulling a crumpled napkin from her pocket. "Vargas has kept her locked inside their compound for two years. He controls her medications, her communications, and her diet. The bruises on her ribs are extensive. If we don't hide her, he will have his private police force tear this city apart to find her."

Natalia looked at Sofia, seeing the reflection of her own past, magnified by the terrifying weight of absolute political power. Javier had been a petty tyrant; Vargas was an institutional monster.
"We don't just hide her, Elena," Natalia said, her eyes hardening into polished steel. "We prepare for war. Because a man like Vargas won't just look for her. He will try to destroy anyone standing in his way."
