Chapter 1 - The Arrival from Arandas

The morning had started with the sweet, nostalgic aroma of toasted corn and rich spices, a scent that completely contrasted with the sterile, modern aesthetic of the luxurious mansion in Guadalajara’s most exclusive neighborhood. Doña Refugio, a gentle sixty-two-year-old woman with calloused hands and a heart full of unconditional love, had arrived from her small village near Arandas just after sunrise. She never came empty-handed. In her woven bags, she carried the essence of her home: vibrant red rice, perfectly refried beans, chicken bathed in a meticulous almond sauce, and a large basket of handmade tortillas wrapped tightly in a beautifully embroidered cloth napkin.

She had taken two buses to get here, eager to see her daughter, Natalia, who worked tirelessly upstairs in her home office. Natalia was the sole provider for the massive household, a highly successful architect whose income sustained not just her husband, Javier, but his entire extended family who lived with them.

“A mother never arrives with empty hands,” Doña Refugio had beamed when Natalia opened the door, kissing her daughter’s cheek.

While Natalia was forced to return upstairs for a crucial video conference with international clients, Doña Refugio simply could not sit still. It wasn't in her nature to be idle. She moved around the sprawling, minimalist kitchen, carefully unpacking the fresh farm cheese and the prickly pear cactus she had brought. She wanted everything to be perfect for when Natalia finished her meeting. She began wiping down the marble countertops, fluffing the designer cushions on the living room sofas, and setting the grand dining table with the feast she had prepared. The steam from the hot food wafted through the air, creating a rare atmosphere of genuine warmth in a house that usually felt more like a museum than a home. It was a beautiful, innocent gesture of maternal love, completely unaware of the devastating storm that was about to break.
