Chapter 18 - Rebuilding the Soil

Exactly one month later, Natalia sold the massive, ostentatious mansion to a foreign investor. Many of her colleagues assumed she would keep it as a triumphant trophy of her divorce, a monument to her victory. But Natalia had absolutely no desire to live inside the walls of her own trauma.
With the massive influx of cash from the sale, she executed her final plan. She paid off all the remaining marital debts Javier had secretly accrued. She injected a solid safety net into her architectural firm, saving it from the accounting disaster the fake payroll had caused.
With the remaining funds, she bought a beautiful, modest single-story house in a quiet, older neighborhood. It had pristine white walls, charming blue-painted window frames, and most importantly, a massive, sun-drenched backyard.
It was here that Doña Refugio finally found her sanctuary. Free from the judging, cruel eyes of Doña Graciela, she spent her days with her hands deep in the rich, dark earth. She planted rows of prickly pear cactus, vibrant red tomatoes, spicy serrano peppers, and two beautiful, fragrant lemon trees right in the center of the yard.

The soil became their therapy. The aggressive investigation initiated by the court didn't completely send Javier’s family to prison as they had feared, but it thoroughly and permanently unmasked them to the high society they worshipped.
The three sisters were legally forced to repay a large portion of the stolen funds and sign humiliating legal documents admitting to the fraudulent charges to avoid jail time. Karla’s failing boutique was permanently shuttered by the bank. Mónica’s engagement was completely broken off. Jimena, the most arrogant of them all, was forced to take a minimum-wage job as a receptionist at a local dental clinic, where she had to learn the painful lesson of smiling politely at the very service workers she used to openly despise.
