Chapter 3 - The Forged Guillotine

Julian sat frozen in the velvet armchair beside the bed. The silence in the penthouse was thick and suffocating.

"Tell me everything," Julian said, his voice eerily calm, masking the volcanic rage boiling beneath the surface.

Elena took a shaky breath, leaning back against the plush pillows. "Eight months ago, I found out I was pregnant. I was so happy, Julian. I bought a little pair of shoes and hid them in your study, waiting for you to come home from Tokyo."

Julian remembered that night. He had come home to an empty house. He had found the shoes weeks later and had destroyed his study in a fit of grief.

"But Victor came to the house first," Elena continued, her voice trembling. "He brought a briefcase. He told me you had sent him. He showed me financial transfers from your private offshore accounts to a notorious security firm known for... for making problems disappear. Then he showed me a contract."

"What contract?" Julian asked, his jaw tight.

"A drafted divorce settlement. But there was a memo attached, signed with your digital key. It said that a divorce would cost you half your company, and that an 'accidental tragedy' would be much cleaner. Victor told me that you never loved me, that I was just a naive girl you married to improve your public image, and now that you needed to merge with the Rossi family, I was in the way."

"And you believed him?" Julian asked, pain lacing his words.

Elena looked at him, her eyes flashing with a mix of anger and sorrow. "He had your passwords, Julian! He had the encrypted digital signature only you use. And he had an audio recording. It was you, Julian. I heard your voice saying, 'Get rid of her. I don't care how. Just make sure it doesn't trace back to me.'"

Julian closed his eyes. The billion-dollar merger with the Rossi empire. He had used those exact words three days before she vanished. But he hadn't been talking about Elena. He had been talking about a toxic, blackmailing board member who was threatening the deal. Victor had recorded it and spliced the audio.

"He told me to run," Elena whispered. "He gave me a fake passport and five thousand in cash. He said if I ever tried to contact you, the men you hired would find me and kill me and the baby. And three months ago, when I ran out of money and got this job... Victor's men showed up. They cornered me in the laundry room. They held a knife to my stomach and told me that if I ever quit this hotel, I'd be dead."

They had kept her close. They had kept her trapped in one of Julian's own hotels to monitor her, torturing her in plain sight while Julian unknowingly signed off on the payroll.

Julian stood up, walking to the window. The city lights blurred in his vision. Victor, his best friend since university. Victor, who had consoled him when Elena disappeared. Victor, who had introduced him to Camila.

"They were waiting for you to give birth," Julian deduced, his voice deadly quiet. "Victor needs me to finalize this merger. Once the ink is dry, he takes his massive cut. But if a legitimate heir is born, my trust fund automatically shifts control away from the board and directly to my child. Victor would lose his proxy voting power."

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her stomach. "They're going to take my baby."

Julian turned around. The look in his eyes was something Elena had never seen before—it was the look of a man who was about to burn the world to the ground.

"No," Julian said softly. "They are going to die."
