Chapter 22

That evening, the Tuscan estate was quieter than it had been in days. The perimeter guards had been heavily reinforced, but the immediate, suffocating threat of Lorenzo Costa and Camila had been completely neutralized.

Julian sat on the edge of the large, plush bed in the master suite, staring blankly at the flickering flames in the grand marble fireplace. He was exhausted down to his very bones. The adrenaline that had fueled his ruthless crusade in New York had finally crashed, leaving him feeling vulnerable in a way he hadn't experienced in years.

He felt the mattress shift as Elena sat down beside him. She wore a simple silk robe, smelling of lavender and warmth. She wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, resting her cheek against his broad, muscular back.

"Isabella is fast asleep," Elena murmured softly. "And Maria is in federal custody in Rome. She confessed everything."

Julian sighed deeply, reaching back to cover her small hands with his large ones. "When Marcus told me what you did... tracking her, springing the trap... I was terrified. But I have never been more intensely proud of you, Elena."

He turned around, pulling her onto his lap and looking deeply into her beautiful brown eyes.

"You didn't need me to save you," Julian said, a note of awe in his deep voice.

"I will always need you, Julian," Elena replied, tracing the strong line of his jaw. "But I refused to be the helpless damsel ever again. When Camila tortured me, I swore I would never let anyone make me feel that powerless. You gave me the strength to heal, but I had to find the courage to fight back on my own."

Julian leaned in, capturing her lips in a passionate, desperate kiss. It wasn't just a kiss of love; it was a profound acknowledgment of her strength, a silent vow of absolute equality.

"No more secrets," Julian whispered against her lips. "No more handling things in the shadows alone."

"Partners," Elena agreed, smiling brightly. "In everything."
