Chapter 1 - The Service Elevator

The silence in the grand lobby was deafening, broken only by the sharp, frantic click of Camila’s stiletto heels as she stepped back.

Julian’s eyes never left Elena’s face. The woman he had loved, the woman who had vanished like a ghost in the night, was standing before him, her hands trembling against the heavy brass of the housekeeping cart. The sheer size of her pregnant belly under the oversized, faded uniform sent a violent shockwave through his chest. His child.

"Julian, please," Camila hissed, pulling at his tuxedo jacket. "People are taking photos. The press will have a field day."

"Let them," Julian growled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that made the nearby concierge flinch. He shrugged Camila’s hand off with enough force to make her stumble. He stepped closer to Elena. "Elena, look at me."

Elena didn't look up. Her breathing was shallow and rapid. "Sir, I have rooms to clean. If you excuse me."

She shoved the heavy cart forward, the wheels squeaking agonizingly loud on the marble. She headed straight for the service corridors, a restricted area for staff only.

Julian didn't hesitate. He abandoned Camila, the billion-dollar merger on his mind, and his pristine public image, sprinting after the cart. He caught the heavy steel door of the service hallway just as it was swinging shut.

"Elena, stop!" he shouted, his voice echoing in the sterile, fluorescent-lit concrete corridor.

She abandoned the cart and rushed toward the service elevator, frantically mashing the call button. Julian closed the distance in three long strides. He slammed his hand against the elevator door just as it began to open, pinning it shut.

"Why?" he demanded, his chest heaving, his voice cracking with eight months of repressed agony. "Why did you leave me? Why didn't you tell me about the baby? Do you know what you put me through?"

Elena finally looked at him. But there was no guilt in her hollow eyes. There was only pure, unadulterated terror.

"Don't hurt us," she whispered, wrapping her raw, chemical-burned hands protectively over her swollen belly. "Please, Julian. You won already. You have everything. Just let me have the baby. I swear I'll never ask you for a dime."

Julian recoiled as if he had been physically struck. Don't hurt us?

"What are you talking about?" he breathed, his billionaire bravado entirely shattered. "Hurt you? Elena, I tore Europe apart looking for you. I hired private investigators. I nearly drank myself to death."

A bitter, broken laugh escaped her lips. "Your investigators found me three months ago, Julian. And they gave me your message loud and clear."

Before Julian could process the horrifying implication of her words, Elena’s eyes rolled back. The stress, the exhaustion, and the shock were too much. She collapsed onto the cold concrete floor. Julian caught her just before she hit the ground, cradling his unconscious wife and their unborn child in his arms.
