Chapter 20 - The Unseen Enemy
Valeria was wheeled rapidly toward the front doors, her mind racing with a thousand terrifying possibilities. Who else in the Sterling family wanted her baby dead?
As Elena limped behind the stretcher, leaning heavily on a paramedic, her cell phone began to ring from inside her apron pocket.
Elena pulled it out. The caller ID simply read: Unknown Number.
With trembling, blood-stained fingers, Elena answered the call.
"Hello?"
Elena asked softly.
On the other end of the line, a heavily electronically distorted, completely unrecognizable voice spoke.
"They saved the mother,"
The robotic voice stated flatly.
There was a long, heavy, terrifying pause.
"But the child is not born yet. The contract remains open."
The call abruptly disconnected, leaving only the sound of dead static.
Elena slowly lowered the phone, her eyes locking onto Valeria as they loaded the pregnant woman into the back of the ambulance.
That night, they discovered that Daniel had actively tried to murder his wife and son for complete control of the empire.
But as the ambulance doors closed, they discovered something infinitely worse.
