Chapter 1 - The Crystal Chandelier

The Sterling mansion was an architectural masterpiece of cold, unyielding opulence.

That evening, the grand hall was filled to absolute capacity with the city’s most influential elite. Wealthy businessmen in tailored tuxedos, socialite friends dripping in expensive diamonds, and powerful family members mingled gracefully beneath the massive, multi-tiered crystal chandelier that dominated the vaulted ceiling.

Soft, classical music played from a string quartet in the corner, while waiters in crisp white uniforms glided seamlessly through the crowd, carrying silver trays lined with crystal flutes of imported champagne.

At precisely eight o'clock, the heavy oak doors at the top of the grand sweeping staircase slowly opened.

Valeria appeared at the landing.

She was seven months pregnant, wearing a flowing, elegant white silk gown that draped beautifully over her swelling stomach. She walked slowly, one hand resting protectively over her unborn child, her face a mask of perfectly rehearsed composure.

Walking just a few respectful paces behind her was Elena, the oldest and most trusted maid in the massive household.

Valeria forced a polite, brilliant smile as the guests below turned their faces upward, raising their glasses in a silent toast to the young, beautiful matriarch of the Sterling empire.

She had made a terrifying, absolute decision.

Tonight, she was going to stand before her entire family and announce that she had received a series of horrific, anonymous death threats. She was going to announce that she was leaving the mansion immediately, taking her unborn child far away to safety, completely abandoning the suffocating, toxic wealth of her husband’s legacy.
