Chapter 10 - The Distraction

Daniel’s face twisted into an ugly, violent snarl.

"Those are incredibly dangerous last words, darling,"

Daniel said, his finger tightening slowly on the trigger.

Elena threw her arms out wide, completely shielding Valeria’s body with her own.

"You will have to shoot me first,"

Elena declared, her voice devoid of any fear.

"That is easily arranged,"

Daniel laughed mockingly, shifting his aim slightly toward the maid’s chest.

Before he could pull the trigger, the massive, heavy oak front doors of the mansion burst open with a deafening crash.

The estate's private security team, having heard the panic from the outside perimeter, rushed into the grand hall with their weapons drawn.

"Drop the weapon!"

The head of security roared, pointing his sidearm directly at Daniel.

Daniel instinctively spun around to face the new threat.

Elena did not hesitate. She seized the fraction of a second of distraction.

She gripped the heavy steel crossbow bolt she still held in her hand and lunged forward, driving the razor-sharp tip directly into Daniel’s forearm.

Daniel let out a scream of agony, his hand spasming violently. The heavy black pistol slipped from his grip and clattered loudly against the marble floor.
