Chapter 14 - The Doctor's Betrayal

"How long have you known about this?"
Valeria asked, her voice a hollow, terrified whisper.
"For five weeks,"
Elena replied, lowering her head in shame.
"Why didn't you warn me immediately?"
Valeria cried, feeling a secondary, agonizing wave of betrayal.
"Because if I told you without absolute proof, he would have simply called me insane, fired me, and hired someone else to finish the job,"
Elena explained desperately.
"I needed undeniable evidence. I played along. I recorded everything."
Elena pointed at the flash drive.
"That drive contains high-definition audio recordings of his bribery attempts, the offshore wire transfer receipts, and the identity of the medical professional who supplied him with the lethal drugs."
Valeria looked down at the drive.
"Who?"
Valeria demanded.
Elena swallowed hard.

Valeria felt a wave of absolute nausea crash over her. The very man she trusted to keep her baby safe had actively conspired to murder him for a paycheck.
