Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Vanessa
The news hit the papers: Vanessa had been spotted in the city, living in a cheap motel and reportedly trying to reach out to former staff members.
Richard’s security head, Miller, updated him immediately.
"She’s not a threat, but she’s stalking the periphery, Mr. Sterling. She hangs around the park near your house."
Richard felt the old fear spike, but he neutralized it.
"Get a restraining order update. If she steps within a hundred yards of our street, arrest her."
He walked home, feeling the weight of the past. He went into Sophie’s room and checked the locks again.
"Daddy?"
Sophie stood in the doorway, clutching her blanket.
"Is the bad lady coming back?"

"No. We have a gate, and we have a lock, and we have a Daddy who won't let her near you. Ever."
