Chapter 31 - The Juilliard Application
The application essay for the Juilliard School of Music required applicants to describe a moment that fundamentally shaped their artistic perspective.
Sophie sat at the kitchen table for days, agonizing over the blank screen of her laptop.
"Write about the competition in tenth grade,"
Sarah suggested gently, bringing her a plate of snacks.
"No,"
Sophie replied quietly.
"That's not where my music comes from."
Sophie finally began to type. She didn't write about Beethoven or Mozart. She wrote about a dark, locked linen closet. She wrote about the terrifying silence of her childhood, and the agonizing hunger that used to keep her awake at night.
But more importantly, she wrote about the day her father took her to a creaky old house. She wrote about the old, out-of-tune piano in the corner. She wrote about how music became the very first voice she was allowed to have, a language that could never be locked away.
