Chapter 34 - The Letter
The thick, heavy envelope arrived on a Tuesday afternoon.
Sophie stared at it sitting on the kitchen counter for twenty minutes before she finally gathered the courage to pick it up.
Richard, Sarah, and Mia stood in a tense, breathless semicircle around her.
"Just open it!"
Mia practically screamed, bouncing on her heels.
Sophie slid her finger under the flap. She pulled out the thick, embossed letterhead. She read the first line, her eyes scanning the text rapidly.
Her hands dropped to her sides.
"Well?"
Richard asked, his heart hammering against his ribs.
Sophie looked up, tears springing instantly to her eyes.
"I got in,"
Sophie whispered, her voice breaking.
"I got a full scholarship."
The kitchen erupted into absolute chaos. Mia screamed, tackling Sophie in a massive hug. Sarah clapped her hands over her mouth, crying tears of joy.
Richard stepped forward, wrapping his arms around his daughter, lifting her off the ground just like he used to when she was a little girl.
"I am so proud of you,"
Richard choked out, burying his face in her shoulder.
"We did it, Dad,"
