Chapter 38 - The Drive

The drive to New York took six hours.

They listened to awful road trip playlists, ate terrible gas station snacks, and talked about everything and nothing.

There was no heavy, emotional impending doom in the car. It was a victory lap.

When they finally arrived at the Juilliard campus, the chaotic energy of the city was overwhelming, but Sophie looked out the window with bright, eager eyes.

They carried her boxes up three flights of stairs to a small, cramped dorm room.

They spent the afternoon unpacking, setting up her bed, and arguing good-naturedly over where to put her mini-fridge.

When everything was finally in its place, the room looked like a tiny, chaotic reflection of Sophie's brilliant mind.

"Well,"

Richard said, wiping sweat from his brow, looking at his watch.

"I suppose I should hit the road before rush hour traffic traps me here until Christmas."
