Chapter 26 - A Step Forward

Richard and Sarah had remained close friends for years, navigating the complexities of single parenthood together.

But one Friday evening, Sarah knocked on the bright yellow door, not holding a plate of cookies, but wearing a stunning dark red dress.

Richard opened the door, entirely momentarily speechless.

"Mia is sleeping over at her cousin's house,"

Sarah said, a nervous, hopeful smile touching her lips.

"And Sophie told me she is perfectly fine staying here alone for a few hours. So, Richard Sterling, would you like to take me to dinner?"

Richard looked past Sarah's shoulder. Sophie was standing at the top of the stairs, giving him a massive, exaggerated thumbs-up.

Richard laughed, a deep, resonant sound.

"I would love to, Sarah,"

Richard replied, grabbing his coat.

It was their first official date. They talked for hours at a quiet Italian restaurant, not about their kids, not about their past traumas, but about art, politics, and their dreams for the future.

When Richard returned home later that night, he found Sophie asleep on the couch with a book on her chest. He draped a blanket over her, realizing that for the first time in a decade, his heart felt completely, entirely whole.
