Chapter 5 - The First Day of School

School was the next hurdle. Sophie had been homeschooled by the nannies Vanessa had hand-picked, nannies instructed to keep her quiet and docile.
"I don't know the rules," Sophie whispered in the car on her first day.
"The only rule is to be kind and to learn,"
Richard said, parking the car.
"And if you ever feel scared, you come straight to the front office. They have my number on speed dial."
He walked her to the classroom. When the teacher, a kind woman named Mrs. Gable, knelt down to welcome her, Sophie hesitated. She looked at Richard. He gave her a small, encouraging nod.

Sophie stepped forward. She didn't look back until she was safely behind her desk. She didn't win a trophy that day, and she didn't become the loudest child in class. But she ate her entire lunch.
She didn't save a single cracker.
