Chapter 6 - A Night of Storms

A thunderstorm hit the town two months into their new life. The wind howled against the creaky window frames, and lightning lit up the living room in flashes of stark white.
Richard woke to the sound of soft crying.
He found Sophie under her bed, huddled in the corner, her hands over her ears.
"Sophie?"
He knelt on the floor, his voice calm.
"It’s just thunder. It’s just the sky making noise."
"It sounds like the closet,"
She whispered, her eyes wide with terror.
Richard didn't try to reason with her anymore. He just reached under the bed, gathered her into his arms, and carried her back to his room. He tucked her into his own bed, staying awake until the sky turned gray with dawn.
"I’m here,"

He whispered every time she shuddered.
She eventually drifted off, her hand resting firmly on his arm. She was learning that some people stayed through the storms.
