Chapter 12 - The Midnight Call

Richard’s phone rang at 3:00 AM.
It was an unknown number, but he knew the caller.
"I know you're in there,"
Vanessa’s voice was a jagged, desperate whisper.
"I’m outside, Richard. I just want to see her."
Richard was at the window in a heartbeat. He saw her, a shadow standing on the sidewalk in the rain.
He didn't open the door. He didn't speak. He simply dialed the police on his secondary phone.
"You are violating a court order,"
He said through the porch intercom.

"The police are on their way."
She stayed until the flashing blue lights appeared. He watched from the dark window as she was handcuffed, the rage she had used to control him finally extinguished by the cold reality of the law.
