Chapter 6 - The Arraignment of CowardsThe Cook County Courtroom was freezing cold, the high vaulted ceilings echoing with the murmurs of reporters and legal aides. Rumors had spread like wildfire that a high-ranking U.S. Army Colonel was bringing a massive federal apparatus to bear on a domestic assault case, and the media gallery was packed to capacity.

Ryan and Linda were led into the courtroom in bright orange jumpsuits, their wrists shackled to their waists. Ryan looked completely broken; his expensive haircut was a messy, greasy disaster, his shoulders slouched, and his eyes darted around the room in panicked desperation. Linda, however, still tried to hold her chin up, glaring at the gallery as if she were a political prisoner rather than a domestic abuser caught red-handed.

Arthur Sterling stood at the defense podium, projecting an aura of expensive confidence. "Your Honor," he boomed, addressing Judge Rebecca Hayes. "My clients are victims of a gross, unprecedented military overreach. Colonel James Bennett used armed troops to illegally enter a civilian domicile, terrorize my clients, and effectively orchestrate a corporate and personal smear campaign. We demand all charges be dropped immediately, and a protective order be placed against the Colonel."

Judge Hayes, a veteran jurist with a reputation for sharp intellect, leaned forward. "Mr. Sterling, I have reviewed the concurrent jurisdiction brief submitted by the JAG liaison. The entry was entirely legal under the 1974 Federal Logistics Easement Act. Let’s move past the theatrics. What do you say to the forensic medical report regarding the defendant's seven-month pregnant wife?"

Sterling cleared his throat, shifting his papers nervously. "Your Honor, pregnancy is a highly emotional time. The alleged injuries are inconsistent, and we have documentation showing Emily Bennett has a history of anxiety—"

"Your Honor, if I may," Major Cho stood up from the prosecution table, her voice cutting through Sterling's defense like a scalpel. "We would like to introduce a new piece of evidence into the record. Less than twenty-four hours ago, the defense counsel attempted to bribe and intimidate the victim, offering a financial payout to suppress evidence of severe child endangerment and felony assault."

Cho brought up the text message on the large courtroom monitors. The gallery gasped, and several reporters immediately began scribbling in their notebooks.

Judge Hayes’s face turned completely to stone. She looked down at Arthur Sterling, then at Ryan and Linda.

"Mr. Sterling, did your office authorize this communication?" the judge asked, her voice dangerously quiet.

"Your Honor, that was merely a standard settlement exploration—" Sterling stammered, the sweat finally breaking out on his forehead.

"Silence," Judge Hayes barked, utilizing the exact same tone my father had used in the apartment. "This court will not tolerate the systemic intimidation of a pregnant woman who was systematically abused in her own home. The defense’s motion to dismiss is denied. Furthermore, in light of this blatant attempt to tamper with a witness, bail for both Ryan Miller and Linda Miller is officially revoked. They will remain in maximum security confinement until the commencement of their trial."

Ryan let out a pathetic, high-pitched wail, collapsing against the defense table. Linda began screaming at Sterling, her sophisticated veneer shattering entirely as she shrieked obscenities at the judge until the bailiffs violently tackled her back into her seat and dragged her out of the room.
