The sheriff stayed behind for another hour, taking my official statement. I provided them with Thorne’s carefully curated data packet, outlining Silas’s identity and his recent criminal activities. The police were astounded that a high-profile fugitive had essentially been handed to them on a silver platter.
When the last cruiser finally pulled away, the house fell into a profound, heavy silence. The adrenaline that had sustained me for the past several hours slowly began to ebb, leaving behind a deep, bone-weary exhaustion.
I locked the front door, secured the broken window upstairs, and walked down into the basement. I knocked softly on the heavy steel door of the panic room.
"Dad? It's me. It's clear."
The lock clicked, and the heavy door swung open. My father stood there, looking older and incredibly tired, but the profound relief in his eyes was unmistakable.
