Chapter 45 - True Peace

The three of us sat together at the kitchen island, laughing and eating pancakes as the morning sun poured through the large glass windows, casting a golden glow over the garden and the fields beyond.
I looked out at the old oak tree where this final ordeal had begun just twenty-four hours earlier. The footprint in the mud would soon be washed away by the afternoon rain. The memory of the threat would fade, replaced by the sound of Lily’s laughter and the simple, profound joy of a quiet life.
We had no more monsters to slay, no more dark chapters to write, and no more lingering ghosts hiding in the tree line.
My father looked at me, then at Lily, and finally out at the bright, open horizon.
"It’s a beautiful day, Emmy," he said, his voice resonant, entirely free of the tension that had haunted him for years.

We were safe, we were completely free, and I knew with absolute, unshakeable certainty: we would never have to leave the light again.
