Chapter 40 - The Arrest

Red and blue lights suddenly flashed through the front windows, bathing the staircase in a frantic, strobe-like glow. Heavy fists pounded on the front door, accompanied by the authoritative shout of law enforcement.
"Sheriff's Department! Open the door!"
I kept my eyes locked on Silas, whose face had completely crumpled in defeat. The arrogant predator had finally realized he was caught in a trap he could not escape.
"It's over," I told him.
I backed slowly down the stairs, keeping my weapon raised until I reached the foyer. I unlocked the heavy deadbolts and swung the front door open. Four armed deputies rushed inside, their flashlights cutting through the darkness.
"He's upstairs in the hallway," I said, raising my hands slowly to show I was no longer a threat. "He's disarmed, but he requires medical attention."
The deputies swarmed up the stairs. I heard the scuffle, the click of handcuffs, and Silas’s muffled groans of pain as they hauled him to his feet. They brought him down the staircase, his hands bound behind his back.

He didn't look at me as they led him out the front door and shoved him into the back of a waiting cruiser.
I stood on the porch, watching the taillights disappear down the long driveway. The flashing lights faded, leaving the garden bathed in the peaceful, natural glow of the moonlight once again.
