Chapter 44 - The Morning After

I stayed awake for the rest of the night, sitting in the rocking chair by the basement stairs, watching the first light of dawn slowly filter through the upper windows. The transition from the dark, terrifying night to the bright, hopeful morning felt deeply symbolic.

At 7:00 AM, Lily finally stirred. She rubbed her eyes, stretched her small arms, and sat up on the cot, looking around the basement with mild confusion.

"Mommy? Why did we sleep down here?" she asked, her voice thick with sleep.

I smiled, walking over to lift her into my arms. She felt so light, so incredibly safe.

"Because we were having a special indoor camping adventure for your birthday night," I told her cheerfully. "But now the sun is up, and it's time for birthday pancakes."

"With sprinkles?" she asked, her eyes lighting up instantly.

"With extra sprinkles," I promised, carrying her up the wooden stairs into the warm, sunlit kitchen.

My father was already at the stove, pouring batter onto a hot griddle. The kitchen smelled of vanilla and brewing coffee. There were no shadows left in the corners of the room. The house felt lighter, as if a massive, invisible weight had finally been lifted from the foundation.
