Chapter 16 - The Commander’s Visit

Old soldiers rarely lose their sense of duty. One afternoon, a black sedan pulled up the gravel driveway. It was General Vance, my father’s former commanding officer and long-time friend. He stepped out of the car, his posture as rigid as a mountain range. The lawn, usually a playground for Lily, suddenly felt like a parade ground.

I watched from the kitchen window, feeling a flicker of apprehension. Would his presence bring back the cold, clinical rigidity that had once defined my father’s life? But as they embraced, the formality vanished. They spent hours on the porch, their voices drifting through the screen door—not discussing strategy or war, but reminiscing about small, human things: the best fishing spots, the quirks of their long-departed wives, and the joy of seeing their children grow.

General Vance eventually came into the kitchen, his eyes softening as he looked at me. "Your father told me what you went through," he said, his voice gruff but kind. "I’ve seen a lot of bravery on the battlefield, Emmy, but what you did—reclaiming your life—that is the highest honor a person can earn." His validation felt like a closing of a circle. The military world, which had once seemed so foreign, was now acknowledging the internal war I had fought to win.
