Chapter 21 - The Guest of Honor

The women’s center asked me to give a speech at their annual gala. I stood before a crowd of faces, many of them reflecting the same fear I had once known. When I walked to the podium, I didn't look for my father in the audience immediately; I focused on the women.
I told them about the apartment, the blue blanket, and the feeling that the world was ending. I told them about the choice to leave. I talked about the importance of finding one’s own sanctuary, not just a physical place, but a state of mind built on self-worth. As I spoke, the room was silent.
When I finished, there was a beat of profound quiet, followed by a standing ovation. I looked at the front row, where my father was standing, tears unashamedly streaming down his face. He wasn't the commander anymore, he was just a father watching his daughter soar. Lily was there too, clapping with all her might. I realized I had gone from being a woman hiding in a corner to a woman standing in the light, and there was no turning back now.
