Chapter 38 - The Confession

The gunshot echoed deafeningly in the narrow hallway. Silas cried out in shock and pain as the bullet shattered his right kneecap. His leg buckled instantly, and he collapsed onto the hardwood floor, dropping his weapon as he grabbed his bleeding knee.
I stepped forward, kicking his discarded pistol far down the hallway, completely out of his reach. I stood over him, my weapon still aimed steadily at his head.
"You... you actually shot me," he gasped, his face pale with shock and agony.
"I told you," I said coldly. "I'm not the woman you terrorized three years ago."
Silas leaned back against the wall, clutching his knee, a twisted smile forming on his lips despite the pain.
"It doesn't matter," he panted. "If I don't check in with my associates in the city by dawn, they have orders to release all the files on your father. Everything he did to help you hide the money. He'll spend the rest of his life in federal prison."
