Chapter 15 - Storms on the Horizon

The southern sky was vast, and in the late summer, it often hosted violent, beautiful storms. One evening, the clouds turned a bruised purple, and the air grew thick with static. I was in the kitchen when the first crack of thunder rattled the windows. Lily scrambled into my arms, burying her face in my neck.

In my past life, a storm meant being trapped inside, the sound of the rain masking the sound of threats. I felt the old panic rising—the heart racing, the breath shallowing. I hurried toward the basement door, a frantic, reflexive action. My father appeared in the hallway, his posture calm, his presence steadying.

"Emmy," he said, blocking my path to the dark stairs. "It’s just weather. Look at me." He guided us to the living room, where the large windows offered a view of the lightning. We sat together, watching the sky illuminate. He explained the science of the thunder, the beauty of the rain nourishing the fields, turning a nightmare trigger into an educational moment. By the time the storm broke, Lily was laughing at the bright flashes. I realized I was finally breathing again. The storm outside couldn't touch us, and the storm inside was finally receding.
