Chapter 9 - The Eviction

Emma locked eyes with her husband. The air in the kitchen was thick with tension, heavy enough to choke on. This was the moment. The line had been crossed so blatantly, so aggressively, that there was no room left for excuses or misinterpretation. She was his pregnant wife, standing in her own home, being verbally abused and degraded by an intruder. She waited for the anger to flash in his eyes. She waited for him to step between them, to finally shield her from the venom. She waited for the man she had married to prove he actually existed.

But Daniel’s shoulders slumped. He looked at his mother, then at Emma, and his expression wasn't one of righteous anger; it was one of sheer, cowardly annoyance. He didn't want to deal with the conflict. He didn't want to face his mother's wrath. He just wanted it to go away. Margaret, sensing her absolute victory, turned her attention fully back to Emma. She raised her hand and pointed a perfectly manicured finger directly at the front door. "Get out of my house!" Margaret commanded, her voice ringing with triumphant authority. "I want you out today. Pack your cheap little bags and leave!"

Emma stood frozen, the words echoing in her ears. My house. Margaret had claimed ownership not just of the property, but of Daniel's very soul. Emma turned her tear-filled eyes back to Daniel. Please, her silence begged him. Say something. Anything. But the silence stretched on, suffocating and absolute. Daniel shifted his weight, looked down at his expensive Italian leather shoes, and said absolutely nothing. It was in that profound, devastating silence that Emma realized the truth. She wasn't losing her husband today; she had never truly had him to begin with.
