Chapter 23 - The Ghost of the Syndicate

While peace was being meticulously cultivated within the walls of the estate, the outer world required constant, ruthless maintenance. Emma’s position as the primary controller of the restructured Vale Global Fund made her a target for the residual elements of Daniel’s old corporate syndicate—men who had profited off his previous, corrupt financial schemes and who now found themselves frozen out of the market.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Marcus Vance walked into Emma’s private office at the corporate headquarters downtown. His expression was unusually grim.
"We have an anomaly in the European sectors, Emma," Marcus said, deploying a series of financial spreadsheets onto the wall monitor. "A secondary holding firm based out of Zurich is quietly buying up the short debt of our primary medical supply distributors. It’s a classic squeeze tactic."
Emma adjusted her glasses, her eyes scanning the digital ledger with the speed of an expert forensic auditor. "They are trying to force a artificial liquidity crisis to drop our stock valuation before the quarterly board meeting. Who is the managing director of the Zurich firm?"
"Julian Sterling," Marcus replied, his jaw tightening. "He was Daniel’s mentor before the collapse. He managed to evade the federal indictments by burying his capital in offshore trusts, but he’s bleeding money now because our new, ethical model has rendered his traditional shell networks obsolete."
Emma leaned back in her leather executive chair, a cold, strategic smile touching her lips. Julian Sterling belonged to the old world—a world that believed women were merely beautiful accessories to be used as leverage in corporate takeovers.
"Julian thinks I am managing this fund with the heart of a philanthropist," Emma said, her voice dropping to an authoritative, icy register. "He forgets that I am the one who handed the encryption keys to the Department of Justice that put his partners in prison. Marcus, contact the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority. We aren't going to defend our distributors; we are going to file an immediate transparency audit against Sterling's holding firm for suspected money laundering."

"That will freeze his entire liquid capital within forty-eight hours," Marcus noted, a slow, appreciative grin breaking across his face.
"Exactly," Emma stated, closing her laptop. "Let's remind the old guard that the rules of the game have permanently changed."
