Chapter 22 - The First Step

The initial supervised visitation was scheduled for the following Saturday morning. The estate’s conservatory, a beautiful glass structure filled with vibrant ferns and cascading white orchids, had been designated as the meeting ground. Dr. Katherine Aris, the child psychologist, sat discreetly in the corner with a notepad, her presence a silent testament to the clinical reality of the situation.

Emma stood near the entrance, leaning against the doorframe, while Richard remained on the patio outside, close enough to intervene but distant enough to grant the moment space.

Daniel sat cross-legged on the patterned rug, looking incredibly small amidst the towering greenery. Sophie stood a few feet away, clutching the worn teddy bear he had given her the previous week. She examined him with the pure, analytical curiosity unique to a three-year-old child.

"Is the bear's name Barnaby?" Sophie asked suddenly, her high-pitched voice echoing in the glass room.

Daniel’s chest rose and fell with a sharp, emotional breath. He forced a gentle smile, keeping his hands open and resting on his knees to show he was no threat. "It can be whatever name you want it to be, Sophie. I bought him for you a long time ago."

"I like Barnaby," she decided, taking a cautious step closer. She held up a small, wooden puzzle piece. "Can you help me find where the blue triangle goes?"

"I would love to help you," Daniel whispered, his voice thick with unshed tears. He did not reach out to grab her or pull her into a desperate hug. He remembered the rules. He remained perfectly still, allowing her to dictate the proximity, allowing her to control the space.

Emma watched from the doorway, tracing the fine lines of the doorframe. A few years ago, seeing Daniel near her child would have caused a suffocating wave of panic. Now, she felt an immense, tranquil detachment. The man on the floor was no longer the tyrant who had controlled her bank accounts, her time, and her sanity. He was merely an applicant, trying to qualify for a minor role in a script she had written.

Dr. Aris caught Emma’s eye and gave a subtle, approving nod. The baseline was established. The architecture was holding.
