Chapter 18 - The Broken Empire

The compulsion to seek answers from the architect of your destruction is a deeply human flaw. Two years after the divorce, Daniel drove to his mother’s house. It was no longer the pristine, intimidating fortress of his youth. The lawn was overgrown, the paint was peeling, and the grand windows looked dull and unwashed. He hadn't spoken to Margaret in over eighteen months, blaming her entirely for the collapse of his life, though deep down, he knew his own silence was just as culpable.
When Margaret opened the heavy front door, Daniel physically recoiled. The woman standing before him seemed to have aged a decade in two years. Her perfectly coiffed hair was thin and streaked with gray. The haughty, aggressive posture had collapsed into a defeated slump, and the sharp, cruel intelligence in her eyes had been replaced by a hollow, vacant stare. The isolation had broken her completely.
They sat in the dusty living room, facing each other across a faded rug. There was no screaming, no blaming, no grand emotional outbursts. The energy required for anger had long since burned out.

"Was it worth it?" Daniel asked, his voice barely a whisper in the silent house.
Margaret slowly looked up at him. Her lips parted, but no words came out. She had spent her entire life fighting for control, crushing anyone she deemed inferior, and asserting her dominance over her son’s life. She had won every argument. She had driven away the "peasant" who threatened her kingdom. But looking at the broken, empty man sitting across from her, she finally understood the cost of her victory. She had lost her reputation, her fortune, and worst of all, the son she had fought so viciously to control. Daniel didn't wait for an answer. He stood up, walked out of the house, and left his mother alone with the ghosts of her pride.
