Chapter 8 - The Breaking Point

The morning that would change the trajectory of their lives forever started over something as trivial and meaningless as a cup of coffee. The tension in the house had reached a boiling point. Margaret had effectively moved in for the week under the guise of "helping" with the pregnancy, but her true goal was to establish absolute dominance. Emma, exhausted, emotionally drained, and deeply depressed, was standing in the kitchen trying to make herself a cup of decaf. Her hands were shaking. She hadn't slept well in weeks, haunted by Daniel’s silence and Margaret’s relentless psychological warfare.
Margaret walked into the kitchen, wearing a perfectly pressed silk robe, her eyes narrowing as she took in Emma’s tired appearance. "You look dreadful," Margaret noted, pouring herself a cup of the expensive espresso Daniel preferred. "I don't know why my son puts up with this misery. You do nothing but drag him down." Emma took a deep breath, trying to summon the energy to walk away, to ignore it as she had a thousand times before. But her pregnant body and battered mind simply had nothing left to give. "Please, Margaret, just leave me alone today," Emma whispered, her voice cracking. The plea for mercy only enraged the older woman. Margaret slammed her cup down on the marble counter, the ceramic clattering loudly. "You are an opportunist!" Margaret shrieked, all pretense of civility vanishing. "You came into this house with absolutely nothing! Empty-handed! You are a pathetic little gold-digger planning to live off my son's hard work for the rest of your miserable life!" Emma felt tears welling in her eyes, blurring her vision. She looked desperately toward the doorway, where Daniel had just appeared, dressed in his tailored suit, briefcase in hand.
