Chapter 13 - The Evidence

Before Emma could answer, Richard Harrison turned his attention to the police officers standing just inside the doorway. He nodded once. This wasn't just a rescue mission; it was an execution of character. Richard had not amassed his fortune by being unprepared, and he had spent the forty-minute car ride mobilizing a legal and investigative team that most small countries couldn't afford.
"Show them everything," Richard commanded, his voice cold and flat.
A detective in a tan trench coat stepped forward. He didn't look at Margaret or Daniel with any sympathy. He opened a thick, leather-bound folder and dropped a stack of documents onto the glass coffee table.
"Mr. Daniel, Mrs. Margaret," the detective began, his tone strictly professional. "We have spent the morning compiling preliminary evidence regarding a pattern of severe psychological abuse, harassment, and intentional infliction of emotional distress."

Daniel stared at the table. Spread across the glass were printed transcripts of text messages his mother had sent to Emma. There were high-resolution photographs taken by private investigators Richard had clearly had on retainer for years, documenting Margaret's aggressive confrontations. But the most damning pieces of evidence were the audio files. The detective pressed play on a small digital recorder. Margaret’s vicious, shrieking voice filled the silent room. You are an opportunist! You came into this house with absolutely nothing! The recording from just an hour ago was crystal clear, capturing every vile word, including Daniel’s cowardice.
Daniel felt the floor dissolve beneath his feet. The reality of his failure was staring him in the face, undeniable and permanently documented. Every excuse he had ever made for his mother, every time he had told Emma she was overreacting, was stripped away, revealing him for the spineless enabler he truly was.
