Chapter 10 - The Phone Call
The pain of a physical blow heals over time, but the emotional agony of being completely abandoned by the person who swore to protect you alters your DNA. As Emma stared at Daniel's bowed head, the tears that had been threatening to spill over suddenly dried up. The fear, the self-doubt, the desperate need for his validation—it all evaporated, replaced by a cold, sharp, diamond-hard clarity. She realized that she had been playing a part in a play that was destined for tragedy. She had stripped herself of her power, her identity, and her resources to prove a point about love, and she had nearly let these people destroy her and her unborn child in the process.
Without saying a word to Margaret or Daniel, Emma slowly reached into the pocket of her cardigan and pulled out her cell phone. Her hands were no longer shaking. She scrolled through her contacts, bypassing the friends she had made in the city, bypassing the emergency numbers, and stopped on a single name she hadn't dialed in over three years: Dad.
She pressed the call button and raised the phone to her ear. The line rang twice before it was answered. The silence on the other end was heavy, filled with years of distance and unspoken emotion.
"Dad," Emma whispered, her voice finally breaking.
"Emma? What happened?" The voice of Richard Harrison, the billionaire titan, was instantly laced with a fierce, terrifying paternal panic.
And then, the floodgates opened. For the first time in years, Emma told him everything. The humiliations. The gaslighting. The cruel insults. The paternity accusations. The lonely nights crying on the bathroom floor. The years of twisting herself into knots to be accepted by people who were entirely beneath her. She poured her shattered heart into the phone.

When she finally stopped, gasping for air, there was a long, chilling pause on the other end of the line. Richard Harrison didn't offer platitudes. He didn't ask clarifying questions. He simply uttered four words that signaled the end of Emma's nightmare.
"I will be there."
