Chapter 16 - The Divorce

Three months after the black SUVs rolled away from the suburban house, the divorce papers arrived. Daniel sat at his dining room table, his hands trembling as he broke the seal on the thick manila envelope bearing the crest of a terrifyingly prestigious law firm. He expected a bloodbath. He expected Richard Harrison’s lawyers to strip him of his assets, demand exorbitant alimony, and drag his name through a brutal, highly publicized legal battle. He braced himself for financial ruin.
But as he read through the immaculate, legally binding pages, a cold, hollow feeling settled deep in his stomach. Emma was not asking for money. She was not laying claim to the house, the cars, or the bank accounts. She wasn't seeking punitive damages or demanding a public apology. The settlement was shockingly simple. Emma wanted absolutely nothing from him. She requested full, unmitigated freedom, and sole legal and physical custody of their unborn child, completely severing all legal and financial ties between them.
The realization hit Daniel harder than any lawsuit ever could. Emma didn't want his money because it meant nothing to her. She didn't want revenge because he simply wasn't worth the effort. To her, he was no longer a person to be fought over; he was a cancer to be cleanly and quietly excised from her life. He picked up his expensive fountain pen, tears blurring the ink on the pages, and signed his name on the dotted lines. As he watched the final signature dry, he felt a piece of his soul detach and wither away. He was officially nothing to her. The legal binding was broken, but the emotional sentence he had condemned himself to had only just begun.
