Chapter 40 - Sunrise in Tuscany

Five years later.
The morning sun cast a brilliant, warm golden glow over the expansive, incredibly peaceful backyard of the Vargas family home in suburban Colorado. It wasn't a massive, imposing fortress surrounded by armed guards and thick concrete walls. It was a beautiful, sprawling modern house with a white picket fence, a large wooden deck, and a lush, perfectly manicured green lawn.
Alejandro stood near the edge of the patio, wearing a casual flannel shirt and jeans, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. He looked completely different. The harsh, terrifying lines of a cartel boss had entirely faded from his face, replaced by the relaxed, genuine smile of a deeply contented father.
He watched as a nine-year-old Mateo enthusiastically threw a baseball across the yard. Leo, now an energetic and completely healthy teenager, caught the ball with a loud smack in his leather glove, laughing and cheering his brother on. The expensive little puppy Alejandro had bought years ago was now a massive, clumsy golden retriever, running happily between the two boys.
The sliding glass door hummed open, and Valeria stepped out onto the wooden deck. She looked breathtakingly beautiful, her face glowing with pure, unadulterated happiness. She wrapped her arms around Alejandro’s waist from behind, resting her cheek gently against his broad back.
"Breakfast is almost ready," Valeria murmured softly, kissing his shoulder. "Doña Socorro made her famous chilaquiles for the boys."
Alejandro turned around, pulling his wife into a tight, loving embrace. He looked into her dark, beautiful eyes—the eyes that had seen through the monster to find the man hiding beneath.
"I was just thinking," Alejandro whispered, gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. "About how incredibly lucky I am. I had an empire of millions, and it brought me nothing but death. Now, I have a small house in the suburbs, and I am undeniably the richest man in the world."

Valeria smiled, leaning up to kiss him deeply. "We built this together, Alejandro. We survived the dark."
As the boys laughed loudly in the bright, sunlit yard, Alejandro pulled his family close. The terrifying ghosts of the cartel were permanently buried, and their beautiful, quiet life was finally, entirely theirs.
