Chapter 1 - The Broken Boy

The heavy silence in the grand hallway was broken only by the raw, heart-wrenching sobs of the four-year-old boy. Valeria Gómez remained kneeling, her arms wrapped protectively around Mateo Ríos. She completely ignored the sharp, throbbing pain in her ribs where the bronze statue had struck her. She ignored the heavily armed cartel guards standing like statues in the periphery. Most of all, she ignored the imposing figure of Alejandro Ríos, the most feared cartel boss in San Pedro Garza García, who was currently staring at her in absolute disbelief.

“Shh, it is okay,” Valeria whispered softly, rocking the small child back and forth on the cold marble floor. “I am right here. I am not going anywhere.”

Alejandro took a hesitant step forward, the shattered glass of his whiskey tumbler crunching loudly beneath his expensive leather shoes. For two long years, his son had violently rejected any form of physical contact. Elite child psychiatrists had been bitten; highly trained luxury nannies had been sent to the emergency room. Yet, here was a twenty-two-year-old maid, clad in an oversized, cheap uniform, holding his son as if she had effortlessly unlocked a door no one else even knew existed.

“How did you do that?” Alejandro’s voice was low, rumbling with a strange mixture of absolute authority and desperate vulnerability.

Valeria did not look up immediately. She continued to gently stroke Mateo’s dark hair until his frantic, heavy breathing began to slow down. Finally, she lifted her head and met the dangerous cartel boss's gaze. Her dark eyes were completely fearless.

“He isn't a monster, Mr. Ríos,” Valeria said evenly, her voice echoing slightly in the vast space. “He is a little boy who saw his whole world violently ripped away. Everyone in this mansion treats him like a wild animal that needs to be tamed and controlled. He doesn't need to be tamed. He needs to be allowed to cry.”

Alejandro’s jaw tightened. “My men will take him to his room now.”

As a tall guard stepped forward, Mateo instantly tensed, his small fingers digging painfully into Valeria’s shoulders. A low, animalistic growl started to build deep in the boy's throat.

“No,” Valeria said sharply, holding up a single hand. “If you take him by force, you will undo everything. Let me carry him.”

Alejandro stared at the young woman, processing her incredible audacity. Nobody gave him orders. But looking at his son, clinging to the poor maid like a lifeline, he gave a slow, curt nod.
