Chapter 23 - Unspoken Feelings

The evening air was thick and warm, filled with the scent of blooming jasmine from the courtyard gardens. After the children were securely tucked into their beds, Valeria found herself wandering out onto the massive stone terrace. She held a glass of iced tea, looking out over the glittering lights of San Pedro in the valley below.

She had been living in the mansion for over eight months now. She was no longer the frightened, desperate maid in an oversized uniform. She wore elegant, simple clothes, and she commanded respect from everyone in the household. But her relationship with Alejandro remained an intricate, unspoken dance. He treated her with profound reverence and undeniable affection, yet they maintained a careful, invisible boundary.

Footsteps echoed softly on the stone tiles. Alejandro stepped out into the night air, carrying a tumbler of amber whiskey. He had taken off his suit jacket and tie, unbuttoning the top of his crisp white shirt. He looked incredibly handsome, but deeply tired.

"You should be resting, Valeria," he said softly, coming to stand beside her at the stone railing. "Chasing two little boys all day is an exhausting job."

"They give me energy," Valeria smiled, taking a sip of her tea. She looked at him, studying the sharp, strong lines of his profile. "It's you I'm worried about, Alejandro. Ever since those men came to the house yesterday, you've been locking yourself in your study. You promised me you were walking away from the cartel."

"I am," Alejandro said fiercely, turning his dark eyes to meet hers. "But you don't just hand in a resignation letter in my world. You have to burn the bridge while you're standing on it. The Culiacán bosses want my territory. If I just hand it over, they will see it as weakness and kill me to consolidate power. I have to dismantle it from the inside out."

He reached out, his warm, rough fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His touch sent a sudden, electric jolt straight through her chest.

"I am terrified that my past is going to bleed into your future," Alejandro whispered, his voice incredibly raw and vulnerable. "You deserve a normal life, Valeria. Not a life looking over your shoulder."

"My life is right here," Valeria answered without a second of hesitation. "I am not running away."
