Chapter 27 - The Safe House

The armored SUV did not return to the sprawling, luxurious mansion in San Pedro. Alejandro knew that El Escorpión’s men would likely have the property under heavy surveillance. Instead, the driver took a series of complex, winding back roads deep into the rugged Sierra Madre mountains, eventually pulling up to a hidden, heavily fortified concrete bunker disguised as an abandoned logging facility.
Doña Socorro, Mateo, and Leo had already been secretly evacuated to the safe house by Alejandro’s most trusted guards an hour earlier.
When the heavy steel doors clanged shut behind them, Valeria immediately ran to the children. Mateo was clutching his favorite stuffed dinosaur, looking incredibly terrified, but he didn't scream. He ran into Valeria’s arms, burying his small face in her ruined silk dress. Leo hugged her tightly from the other side.
"We are completely off the grid," Vargas reported to Alejandro, setting a heavy tactical rifle on the metal table. "We have enough food and ammunition in this bunker to withstand a siege for two weeks. But the cartel will eventually find us."
Alejandro paced the length of the concrete room, his mind working furiously. He looked at the children, then at Valeria, who was whispering comforting words to them. He had promised to build a legitimate life, a safe haven, but his dark legacy was actively trying to consume them all.
"We cannot fight a prolonged war against El Escorpión," Alejandro finally stated, turning to face his remaining loyal lieutenants. "He has the numbers, the money, and the momentum. If we stay and fight, we will eventually run out of bullets, and my family will die."
"So what is the play, Boss?" Vargas asked grimly.
"I am going to burn the empire down to the ground," Alejandro declared, his voice devoid of all hesitation. "I am going to contact the DEA and the Mexican Federal Police. I am going to hand over every single ledger, every bank account, and every dirty politician on the cartel payroll. I am going to give them El Escorpión on a silver platter."

"If you do that, you are a dead man, Alejandro," Vargas warned. "The cartel will put a ten-million-dollar bounty on your head. And the feds will lock you in a maximum-security prison for the rest of your life."
"I don't care about my life," Alejandro whispered, his eyes locked entirely on Valeria and his son. "I only care about theirs."
