Chapter 39 - The Deal

The transition into witness protection was a rigorous, highly exhausting process. For two long months, Alejandro, Valeria, Mateo, Leo, and Doña Socorro lived in a secluded, heavily guarded federal compound in Virginia. They underwent intense psychological evaluations, tedious legal debriefings, and extensive training to memorize their completely new, fabricated identities.

Alejandro Ríos, the feared, ruthless King of the North, no longer existed in any database on earth. He was now Alejandro Vargas, a successful, quiet architectural consultant who had relocated his family for business opportunities. Valeria was officially recognized as his legal wife, and the children were enrolled in normal, suburban schools under their new surnames.

On their final day at the secure federal compound, Agent Ramirez handed Alejandro a thick, manila envelope.

"This is the deed to your new property, fully paid for by the government relocation fund," Ramirez explained, offering a respectful handshake. "It is located in a very quiet, incredibly beautiful suburb outside of Denver, Colorado. The crime rate is virtually zero. You have neighbors who host neighborhood barbecues, not cartel shootouts. It is the boring, peaceful life you fought so hard for."

"Thank you, Agent Ramirez," Alejandro said genuinely, taking the envelope. "For keeping your word. For saving them."

"You saved them, Alejandro," Ramirez corrected gently. "I just provided the airplane."

Later that afternoon, the family boarded a commercial flight heading entirely toward their new future. Valeria sat next to Alejandro, holding his hand tightly as the plane soared through the bright blue sky. Mateo and Leo were sitting in the row ahead of them, arguing playfully over a comic book.

Alejandro looked out the airplane window, watching the fluffy white clouds drift by. He felt a profound, indescribable lightness in his chest. The heavy, suffocating shadow of blood, violence, and constant paranoia that had dictated his entire adult life was finally, completely gone. He didn't have to look over his shoulder anymore. He didn't have to sleep with a loaded pistol under his pillow.

He squeezed Valeria’s hand, pulling her close. The nightmare was officially over, and the beautiful dream was just beginning.
